Nelson Mandela
Born in the tiny
village of mvezo on the banks of the Mbashe River In Transkei on July 18,1918,
Rolihlahla Mandela or Nelson Marella grew up as a village child in South Africa.
In the Xhosa Language, Rolihlahla means “pulling the branch of a tree” but more
commonly translates as “troublemaker”.
In his 20 years
old, Mandela actively took part in the anti-apartheid movement. He also joined
the African National Congress in 1942. He orchestrated a campaign of peaceful,
non-violent defiance again the South African government and it’s racist
policies for 20 years. In 1993, Mandela and South African President, F.W. de
Klerk, were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Price for their efforts to
dismantle the country’s apartheid system.In 1994, Mandela’s birthday was declared
as “Mandela Day”. The purpose of this day is to promote global peace and
celebratethe South African leader’s legacy. Mandela died on December 5,2013at
his house in Johannesburg
